Abahan readies for 2017 UTMB
by Ofelia C. Empian

Elite runner Sandi Menchi Abahan added another feather on her cap when she topped the recently staged Tri United Exceed Long Distance 2017 in her age category last July 2 in Subic Bay Freeport.

Abahan led the 25-29 years old female category finishing the two-kilometer swim, 60-km bike, and 15- km run course with a total of four hours, 39 minutes and nine seconds.

She was followed by Kylee Therese Lagman of 2600 Baguio Tri Team with a race course time of 4:46:04 and Carminia Jereza of Fitness First with 4:48:04.

The homegrown athlete, representing Team Podium Boutique Hotel Baguio, finished the race despite facing some mechanical problems with her bike and lack of swim and bike training, as she is focused on training for the Ultra-trail du Mont-Blanc or UTMB race.

“Preparation for the TDS (UTMB) is starting to peak, training on more specific workout and strategies for the run,” said Abahan.

It will be the first time for the reigning and three-time Pilipinas Akyathlon women’s champion to join the international trail running event, considered as the world summit of all trail running.

The UTMB is set from Aug. 28 to Sept. 3 in the alps, passing through France, Italy, and Switzerland. It has a distance of approximately 166 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the first all-female trail run event dubbed Grit or Girls Running in Trails has been organized to raise funds for Abahan in her upcoming quest for UTMB.

The event is set on Aug. 13 at Basekamp, Pintong Bukawe, San Mateo Rizal with 15K and 6K among other categories.

“Sandi is the first Filipina who has a big chance of grabbing a top spot in this prestigious world mountain race. Sandi has the will and capacity to fly our flag on the world stage. In preparation for her big race on Aug. 28, Sandi will need every support and help that can elevate the Filipino dream to the highest peaks,” organizers said.

For more information about the race visit Race Yaya on Facebook or the Grit: An All Women Trail Run events public page.
