Magali vies for WBC throne
by Harley F. Palangchao

Highland Boxing Gym’s Carlo Magali is all set for the World Boxing Council-Oriental Pacific Federation super featherweight belt against Sandeep Balhara of India in Kualu Lumpur, Malaysia today, July 9.

The natural lightweight and orthodox fighter from Talibon, Bohol will take advantage of his 11-year experience as a boxer against the undefeated Indian boxer.

The 30-year-old Magali has 21 wins, nine losses, and three draws while Balhara, 28, is undefeated in four professional fights.

Magali will enter the fight as a heavy favorite owing to his impressive résumé having fought some of the toughest boxers in the Philippines, Japan, Russia, South Africa, and Australia.

The Filipino fighter, who has been training in La Trinidad, Benguet for several years now, is a known slugger.

He will be remembered by Australian boxing fans for capturing the vacant International Boxing Federation Pan Pacific super featherweight title against David Browne Jr. with a stunning knockout victory on September 2015.

Browne later collapsed after suffering a KO loss and died in coma in the hospital.

Magali has been chasing world belts but was unsuccessful over the last several years.

He fought for the vacant WBC international bantamweight belt against Vincent Palicte in September 2009 but lost via unanimous decision.

He fought Andrey Bognadov for the vacant WBO oriental featherweight title but also suffered a unanimous decision loss in April 2013.

He also suffered a technical knockout against Emmanuel Tagoe in Ghana when he challenged the latter for the WBA international lightweight title in July 2016.

Pavel Malikov of Russia also defeated him for the WBC Asian Boxing Council silver lightweight belt in November 2016.

Magali bounced back with a majority decision victory against Filipino boxer Michael Escobia in March this year.
