HIGHLAND GYM IN BANGKOK -- Igorot sportsman and multi-awarded boxing promoter Brico Santig opened the branch of Highland Boxing Gym in Bangkok, Thailand with top boxing promoter Suchat Picitwuttinan and Muay Thai fighter Nung Tom, the transgender and kickboxing champion whose life was portrayed in the movie “Beautiful Boxer” gracing the ribbon cutting rites.

Cordilleran international boxing promoter Brico Santig has opened a branch for Highland Boxing Gym in Bangkok, Thailand in a bid to train future champions overseas.

Santig, owner and manager of Highland Boxing Gym based in La Trinidad, Benguet, is behind the revival of the boxing careers of journeymen from Mindanao and Visayas, who are now top contenders since they started training in La Trinidad.

Highland Boxing’s new branch is at 329 Lat Phrao 94 High School Town in Town, Wang Thongtang, Bangkok.

Santig said he has tasked Filipino boxers Jayve Alipio and Geboi Mansalayao as main trainers while his brother-in-law Supanat Chanram will be the gym manager. Santig is married to a Thai.

Thailand’s top boxing promoter Suchat Picitwuttinan and Muay Thai fighter Nung Tom, the transgender and kickboxing champion, whose life was portrayed in the movie “Beautiful Boxer,” graced the occasion.

Highland Boxing started as a Muay Thai gym in 1998 before Santig added boxing in 2005. Since then, the gym has produced Igorot champions, who were later joined by journeymen from the South such as former International Boxing Organization world light flyweight champion Rey “Hitman” Loreto.

Among the Igorot champions from Highland are former Women’s International Boxing Association International light flyweight champion Jujeath Nagaowa, former World Boxing Organization Oriental bantamweight champion Dayer Gabutan, and former World Boxing Council Asia Council Continental champion Alvin Tam.

Earlier this year, five boxing champions from Highland Boxing Gym are among the major awardees in the annual Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Memorial Awards Banquet of Champions.

The awardees are Dennis Padua, the Philippines’ welterweight champion; Sonny Katiandagho, the World Boxing Council EPBC welterweight champion; and Carlo Magali, the Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation featherweight champion.

The two other awardees are World Professional Boxing Federation international lightweight champion Allan Tañada and Philippines’ flyweight champion Donny Mabao.
