Two Cordilleran wrestlers powered Team Philippines to win three silver and 11 bronze medals in the recently held South East Asian Wrestling Championships in Bac Ninh City, Vietnam from Nov. 23 to 25.

Jason Saltin Baucas and Minalyn Foy-os of Baguio City each won bronze in the men and women’s division, respectively.

Baucas won bronze in the men’s freestyle of the 74-kilogram category beating his tough opponents from Vietnam and Thailand while Foy-os conquered the 53-kg women’s freestyle category.

“It was challenging because I have to play in the higher weight class, most especially with Vietnam,” Baucas said, adding he used to play in the Greco Roman category which has a lower weight of 46 kg to 60 kgs.

The event is the second international victory for the 20-year-old wrestler from Nabalicong, Natubleng, Buguias.

He won gold in the South East Asian Junior Wrestling Championships 2017 in Thailand in April.

He won in the 80-kg category against formidable foes from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.

The Cordilleran duo joined the 15-strong athletes that represented the country in the wrestling event, which will serve as the benchmark competition for the upcoming SEA Games in Manila on 2019.

Other athletes who won in the event in the Greco Roman are Alvin Lobreguito, silver medalist in 57-kg; Francis Villanueva, silver medalist in the 130-kg; Jonathan Maquilan, bronze medalist in the 66-kg; and Christof Hofmann, bronze medalist in the 98 kg.

Also winning in the women’s freestyle are Grace Loberanes, bronze in 48-kg; Noemi Tener, bronze in 58-kg. while the men’s freestyle are Alvin Lobreguito, bronze in 57-kg; Ronil Tubog, bronze in 61-kg; Noel Norada, bronze in 59-kg; Joseph Angana,  bronze in 70-kg; Jefferson Manatad, bronze in 75-kg; and Christof Hofmann,  silver in 98-kg.

The championship is the premier annual senior age group (21 and older) wrestling event in the SEA region, where the top wrestlers compete for regional glory.

“The Philippines has always brought home multiple gold medals in previous meets, as it is a consistent power house in the region,” the Wrestling Association of the Philippines said.

WAP added that the competitors of the event, with Vietnam as overall winner, are most likely the same athletes who will be competing in the SEA Games, thus preparing the nation’s athletes for the SEA Games.
