Igorota runners win in Milo leg
by Harley F. Palangchao

Two ultra runners in Baguio and Benguet emerged as among the top 10 finishers in the 42-kilometer full marathon of the 41st National Milo Marathon leg 3 in Manila on July 30.

Valerie Tauli clocked four hours, seven minutes, and 46 seconds to land in top 8 of the event that drew top runners in the country.

Up and coming runner Gretchen Felipe of Itogon, Benguet, who was discovered in late 2015 in long distance and ultra races, was in top 10 with a time of 4:11:36.

The race was even more memorable, as seasoned winner in ultra races in the Cordillera Maria Josephine “Majo” Liao emerged as a top 5 finisher with a time of 3:37:42.

The 41st Milo Marathon national finals is set in Cebu on Dec. 3 after all leg series in key cities have been completed. Baguio has not been chosen among key cities for the past two consecutive years.

After the Manila leg, the national race event will continue in Angeles on Aug. 6 then in Tarlac on Aug. 13, before heading to Naga Aug. 27 while Lucena will host the event on Sept. 3.

The leg series will continue in Lipa on Sept. 10, Tagbilaran on Sept. 24, Roxas on Oct. 1, Iloilo on Oct. 8, General Santos on Oct. 15, Davao on Oct. 22, Butuan on Nov. 12, and Cagayan De Oro on Nov. 19.

Organizers announced that more than a staunch advocate of Philippine sports and Filipino athletes, the National Milo Marathon is also a platform that empowers children nationwide.

“For the past seven years, the National Milo Marathon’s Help Give Shoes advocacy, in partnership with Department of Education, has inspired 70,000 aspiring athletes to fulfill their dreams by donating brand new pairs of running shoes. This year, the Help Give Shoes advocacy will be donating 5,000 pairs to underprivileged school children,” organizers said.

The Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Department of Education, and the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association endorse the 41st National Milo Marathon.
