Baguio’s reigning bemedalled female taekwondo athlete Angelica Joyce Gaw helped powered the Philippine Taekwondo Team to a gold medal performance in the 2017 Anyang World Taekwondo Hanmadang in South Korea over the weekend.

Gaw is part of the all-female Philippine Team that impressed judges in the taekwon chejo (taekwondo dance) besting other international teams in one of the prestigious taekwondo competitions.

She is also part of the mixed team that won gold in taekwondo aerobics, overwhelming China and Malaysia.

Aside from two gold medals, the Philippine team mentored by former world poomsae gold medalist Rani Ortega and Tony Del Prado clinched a silver medal.

Two more members of the Philippine team won two most valuable player awards.

The international competition drew close to 1,200 male and female athletes from over 50 countries.

The 19-year-old Gaw, who was picked by De La Salle University’s taekwondo team, has been representing the country in international competitions since she was still a student of the University of Baguio High School. She was UB-HS valedictorian in 2015.

She is a second year Sports Studies student of De La Salle.

Before becoming a member of the Philippine team, Gaw won gold medals in national competitions such as the Carlos Palanca Jr. TKD Championships, National Poomsae TKD Championships, Batang Pinoy, and Milo sporting events.
