by Ofelia C. Empian

Four athletes from Baguio will be part of the national team that will represent the country in the International federation of Muay Thai Amateur 2017 Muay Thai Youth World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand from Aug. 3 to 11.

Coach Bryan Olod of Kafagway MMA said the homegrown athletes are Liane Benito, Rosemarie Recto, Mariah Tenyce Co, and Kurt Lubrica who will join around 1,000 athletes from around 79 countries.

He said Benito will compete in the 14 to 15 years old category (45 kilograms), Recto in the 16 to 17 or 48kg category, Co in the 12 to 13 years old or 50kg, and Lubrica in the 16 to 17 yrs old or 51kg category.

Olod trains Benito and Recto, both students of Sablan National High School, in the Kafagway MMA while Co trains with Tribal-Torogi gym and a student at Philippine Science High School at Irisan. Lubrica is a student of Guisad Valley National High School and from Siam Youth Muay Thai Team.

“They are competing with the other members of the Philippine Juniors Muaythai Team from other parts of the country,” Olod said.

Other athletes joining them are Rudzma Abubakar of Zamboanga, Ghenyhan Berdon of Zamboanga, Bryan Siglos of Zamboanga City, and Kristian Narca of Quezon City.

Accompanying the Baguio athletes is coach Edzel Ngina, a member of the national coaching staff of Muay Thai Association of the Philippines (MAP), together with coach Roland Claro of Zamboanga, also a national coach of MAP.

Meanwhile, Olod said he is also in Thailand as a participant of the IGLA (Intellectual Game Library Animation) Muay Thai Education Course and the IGLA Muay Thai Animation Education System.

“I was sent by our National Sports Association, the MAP headed by our chairman and president Gen. Lucas Managuelod and our Secretary General Pearl Anne Managuelod,” he said.
