Philippine Sports Commission Commissioner Celia Kiram presented a check worth P250,000 to Mayor Mauricio Domogan as the Baguio delegation’s prize for winning the overall championship in the 2016 Batang Pinoy competitions.
The annual sporting event was held in Tagum City, Davao Del Norte, from Nov. 25 to Dec. 2 last year with top athletes from different local government units competing in various sports disciplines.
Kiram, the lone female commissioner of the male-dominated PSC, handed over the check recently.
Domogan commended the athletes and coaches for their achievement that “has brought honor not only to themselves and their families but to the whole city as well.”
City Sports Coordinator Gaudencio Gonzales said Baguio’s delegation won a total of 137 medals listed as follows: 55 gold, 41 silver and 41 bronze medals.
The delegations from the cities of Cebu, Davao, Zamboanga and Quezon came in second, third, fourth, and fifth places, respectively.
Gonzales said the amount would be used to purchase various sports equipment that will be used by local athletes for training and competition purposes.
