Iñigo Anton, 12, awarded Cadet Karter of the Year
by Harley F. Palangchao

ACHIEVER -- Iñigo Anton was awarded the prestigious Cadet Karter of the Year plum during the Golden Wheel and AAP in Manila last month. His parents, Anton and Karen, are proud that even at a tender age, he is excelling in sports as well as in academics.

Baguio’s young racing pride Iñigo Anton took home the prestigious Cadet Karter of the Year award from two reputable awarding bodies during the Golden Wheel and the Automobile Association Philippines, recently.

It is the first time that a young racer was given the award by both awarding bodies in separate awards nights.

With the awards, Anton, 12, etched his name in Philippine motorsports and took home the perpetual trophy for Cadet Karters.

Iñigo, son of multi-awarded Castrol-Yokohama racing champion Carlos, has been sweeping awards even before he reached 10 years old. Despite his achievements in sports, the younger Anton also maintained academic excellence, being a consistent top honor pupil.

“I’m so proud of Iñigo and for his name to be on one of the Perpetual Trophies of Motorsports is something to be very proud of.  I think I can already retire soon,” said his father who is an eight-time AAP Driver of the Year and two-time Golden Wheel awardee.

The older Anton was also awarded the “Motorsports Achievement Award” for winning in the Taiwan Gymkhana last October with teammate Milo Rivera.

The young Anton was motivated to follow his father’s footsteps, saying he is a responsible father and a great sportsman.

“As I was growing up, I saw all of my dad’s trophies in the house and wanted to win the same kind of award one day. Today that dream came true and even better, as my dad was also awarded on the same night during the Golden Wheel awards,” said the younger Anton.

The father and son tandem now plans to compete as teammates in the National Slalom Series for 2017 under the colors of Mark Young Racing.

“Iñigo is very excited to get back into racing again after doing two years of karting with the Kilton-Kart Plaza team,” his father said.
