World-class Igorot MMA warriors Mark Eddiva and Roldan Sangcha-an were not successful in their fights during the Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in the country over the weekend.
But Sangcha-an, who made his second appearance in UFC on May 16, is P2-million richer among Filipino MMA fighters compliments of the UFC Fight of the Night bonus.
Guamanian’s Jon delos Reyes submitted Sangcha-an via rear naked choke in round 2 of the preliminary bouts.
The two flyweight fighters gave MMA fans an action-packed bout with their submission attempts on the mat followed by an exchange of blows in round 1.
Delos Reyes suffered a deep cut on his right eye in round 2 but it did not prevent him from trading punches with the Igorot warrior until the former set up his opponent for a successful RNC win in round 2.
“The UFC Fight Night Manila is done. We are so proud to represent the Philippines, though we have not won our fights. But one thing is for sure, we gave our very best to show the world what we got. It challenged us to do more and train harder to have a better performance so people can never forget it,” Sangcha-an said in his post fight remark.
Eddiva, on the other hand, suffered a split decision loss against Levan Makashvili, who capitalized on his wrestling skills with several takedowns that earned him the win.
Eddiva suffered his second loss with six wins.
Following the fight night, ardent MMA supporter lawyer Dante Bagsan scored what he described as “rude and insensitive” comment on the Filipino fighters and Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao.
“I do not want to say this time and time again but to set the record straight, Team Lakay is the number one MMA team here in the Philippines. Why do I say this? It is a fact that fighters of Team Lakay brutally and outpointed each and every opponent fielded against them in the local MMA. Moreover, it is the only team here in the Philippines which is well recognized and praised in the international MMA,” Bagsan said.
