Luigi Wong secures slot for US kids world golf
by Jimmy K. Laking

Luigi Paolo Wong, the 13-year-old grade 7 pupil of La Trinidad’s Hope Christian Academy easily outclassed his field last week to secure a slot in the 2014 United States Kids World Championship scheduled on July 24 to 26 in North Carolina.

Wong qualified for the event by topping the 13 year bracket of the US Kids world championship qualifier played at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas on May 12 to 14.

He will join more than 10 Philippine young golfers representing ages six to 15 and 18 years old.

Wong scored a total aggregate of 233 points, much ahead of eventual second placer Ira Alido and third placer Marc Corrales, both of Manila, who scored 242 and 243, respectively.

Early this year, Wong anchored the Baguio Country Club team in amassing a total score of 366 points to win the AM-C division of the just-concluded 64th Fil-Am Invitational golf tournament.

He also placed first overall in the individual scoring in the Am-F regular category.

The versatile Wong has previously won six golds in Taekwondo at the Palarong Pambansa for Benguet from 2009 to 2012.

Businessman Danny Wong said his son discovered a liking for golf two years ago and has since developed into a tournament player since he joined the Baguio Junior Golf Association. He credited his son’s excellent showing to a competitive spirit and a drive to excel.

“He never forgot to seek the Lord’s guidance,” he added.
