CAR athletes show they are new powerhouse in Palaro
by Harley F. Palangchao

Cordillera athletes’ significant leap in the recent Palarong Pambansa in Laguna from 10th in 2013 to fifth place overall this year made a major impact in the landscape of the country’s biggest sporting event for elementary and secondary students.

Overall, Cordillera athletes collected 24 gold, 11 silver, and 12 bronze medals (not 14 as earlier reported) in the regular sports while the demo and Special Education added 10 gold, five silver, and nine bronze medals.

“The accomplishment of our athletes was unprecedented. Their feat has put our region in the limelight and has raised the eyebrows of onlookers, who could not believe the players are generally members of indigenous peoples in the Cordillera,” said Department of Education Regional Director Ellen Donato.

From day one to six, Cordillera was consistent at top four only to slide to top 5 when Central Visayas delivered more silvers while the Cordillera athletes have no more events left to play on the last day of the tournament.

Central Visayas has also 24 gold, 27 silver, and 41 bronze medals.

On top of the medal standing was the National Capital Region with 107-64-56-medal haul followed by Region 4-A with 38-51-51 medals and Western Visayas in top 3 with 32-33-38 medals.

But while the Cordillera was only fifth in the ranking, Donato said the region could be in the top spot if athletes’ population is a factor.

“Compared to the regions in top 4 spots, especially NCR which has thousands of athletes who competed in all sports disciplines, Cordillera’s overall standing could have been much better if we sent athletes close to a thousand,” Donato said.

“Generally, the golds were harvested in combative sports. There was also a commendable performance manifested by athletes in demo sports, which showed we have the potential to participate in the events including competitions among the differently-abled,” Donato added.

CAR has dispatched 550 athletes from elementary and secondary, including those from SPED, coaches, and chairpersons.

Donato thanked those who extended support to the Cordillera athletes and their coaches led by Benguet Gov. Nestor Fongwan and Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan together with other local chief executives and legislators in the northern highlands.
