Filipino cyclist primed to clinch Ronda Pilipinas title

The three-stage Baguio killer lap is expected to give a prelude to who will win Ronda Pilipinas 2014.

The former boys of summer are primed to pedal back in this mountain resort from the Dagupan leg with cyclists from eight international teams racing side by side with them.

The 97.4-kilometer Dagupan to Baguio leg via Kennon Road will be followed with a one day rest.

Fourteen teams will be vying for the P600,000 prize out of the P7.6 million total purse.

The 72.9-kilometer Baguio criterium will be followed by the San Fernando to Baguio climb via Marcos Highway.

Defending champion Irish Villanueva will be leading a team from the Philippine Army.

Villanueva will get support from Alfie Catalan, Alvin Benosa, Rustom Lim, Joshua Carino, Junrey Navarra and Ronald Lomotos in the 16-day road bike. South East Asian Games gold medalist and 2012 winner Mark Galedo, however, hopes to get back to the top podium.

Galedo is eyeing support from Baler Ravena as well as Chris Joven, Edmundo Nicolas, Jr., Ryan Cayubit and Mark Bordeos.

Philippine Navy Standard Insurance, however, could not be left behind with Santy Barnachea and Loyd Reynante as skipper and co-skipper.

The team includes Jan Paul Morales, Joel Calderon, George October and Rudy Roque. Beefed up with foreign riders, Roadbike Philippines skippered by RonnelHualda has Spanish Edgar Nieto and Brit Daniel Patten.

The team also includes Nelson Martin, Carlos Gasmen and Dominic Perez. Former Tour champion Warren Davadilla leads Team Cebu-Kalit Philippine Air Force, while March Mcquinn stars for Cycline Butuan-Mindanao.

PLDT-Maynilad Pro Team led by Mark Bonzo completes the seven team RP representation.

The race which will see two SEAGames winners in Galledo and Laotian Ariya Phounsavath started with the 66-kilometer criterium at the Quezon City circle on Feb. 1 followed by the 156.7 km Muntinlupa to Silang Cavite stage 2 and the 135.9 km Tagaytay to San Pablo City, Laguna leg.

This was followed with the Stage 4, Feb. 4, 103.7 km. (San Pablo-Lucena), Stage 5, Feb. 5, 148.2 km (Lucena-Lucena); Stage 6, Feb. 7, 155.1 km (Lucena-Antipolo); Stage 6, Feb. 7, 172-km (Valenzuela-Tarlac), Stage 7, Feb. 8, 182.2 km (Tarlac-Dagupan), Stage 12 is the Agoo-Angeles City leg on Feb. 14, followed by the 146-km Angeles-Subic Stage 13 on Feb. 15 before winding up with a 60-km criterium in the National Capital Region on Feb. 16.

The top Filipino racer gets P400,000 and the same amount to the best Filipino team.
