by Harley F. Palangchao

Davao pride and La Trinidad-trained Rey Loreto proved pundits he has a bright boxing career ahead of him when he won the vacant International Boxing Organization light flyweight belt in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

The southpaw Loreto, who trained at the Highland Boxing Gym, connected a solid left that knocked out former world champion Nkosinathi Joyi in the third round of the 12-round undercard of the WBA and IBO middleweight champion Gennary Golovkin against Osumanu Adama.

The 23-year-old opted to join the Highland Boxing gym of awarded promoter Brico Santig to prove he can be the next world champion after suffering 13 losses in his young boxing career.

Loreto, the reigning PABA light flyweight champion, has 18 wins with 10 by way of KO.

He opened the bout with a series of solid left that surprised former IBF minimum weight champion, Joyi.

The young fighter almost knocked out the African fighter at the end of round two but the latter was saved by the bell.

Highland Boxing trainer JJ Jorda then convinced Loreto to finish the fight in third round by unleashing powerful combinations before the solid left hook that landed on the head of the African fighter.

Foreign crowd in attendance at the Salle des Etoiles were on their feet as the referee declared a KO.

Loreto, Santig, and Jorda were given a warm welcome by officials of the Games and Amusement Board as they touched down at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport last Monday.
