RP team karate head coach ready to teach advance kata
by Jimmy K. Laking

The Bontoc-born coach of the Philippine Karate national team will teach advance kata and kumite (sparring) drills in a one-day clinic slated on Feb. 15 at the La Trinidad municipal gym in a bid to keep local practitioners updated.

“This is both for beginners and advance practitioners,” said 5th dan Frank Kawaen, 48, current coach of the national team that saw action in the 2013 Southeast Asian games in Myanmar.

“Let us share and review the traditional kata and tackle the advance forms,” he said, spreading the welcome mat to the region’s various Shotokan karate clubs.

He said participants from Laoag (led by sensei Heidel Chomacog), Ifugao, Bontoc, Mountain Province, and Mankayan, Benguet will join their counterparts in La Trinidad and Baguio City in the seminar.

In a meeting with Benguet Prosecutor William Bacoling and third dan Joseph Pul-oc, Kawaen said he will also give pointers on conditioning and proper breathing.

Pul-oc said karate practitioners should take advantage of the opportunity to learn pointers from the former world kata champion, who is a full-time karate instructor.

Kawaen is a product of the Japan Karate Association under Kunio Sasaki in Manila. He won a gold medal in kata in the Kobe Osaka World Cup 2008 in Greece.

He served as karate instructor in Dubai but has since moved back to the Philippines last year and built his own gym in Mindoro. He acquired his 5th dan in Japan under USKU’s Shihan Kenichi Fukamizu in 2010.

Participants can register personally at the La Trinidad gym at 8 a.m.
