Iñigo Anton, 8, sets record as RP’s youngest race car champ
by Harley Palangchao

Eight-year old Baguio boy Iñigo Anton set a record by being the youngest in his class to win in the Circuit Showdown 2 at the Clark International Speedway recently.

Anton, proud son of Philippine Nascar Team and multi-awarded Castrol driver Carlos, set a record by becoming the youngest ever race car driver in the country.

Under the watchful eyes of his father who was with him in the passenger seat, Iñigo  drove a 325i 200 Horsepower BMW to set a time of one minute 28.483 seconds around the short track, even beating a couple of grown-ups in his class.

The grandson of civic leader Edna Anton was awarded the “Youngest Driver” trophy at the end of the event. He is a third generation racecar driver because his grandfather Mike, used to race alongside Pocholo Ramirez in the Renault team back in the ‘60s.

“Iñigo was simply amazing. I’m so proud of him. After the morning heats he was actually beating seven guys in his class,” said the proud father.

The older Anton, meanwhile, considered the Circuit Showdown 2 as a final practice round before his team competes in the upcoming Nascar Race Ex World Circuit debut in May at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.

Anton set yet another record by improving his old record, re-setting it to one minute and 4.673 seconds using the Mark Young-Hornitex prepared CRX.

Anton, together with members of the Philippine Team, is now gearing up for the Nascar Race Ex-World Circuit in the United States.

The other members of the team are Stefano Marcelo, Michelle Bumgarner, Pia Boren, and Gaby de la Merced.

Cebuana Luillier, Fox Sports, Goodyear, Manozca Foundation, Spirit Sports, ABS-CBN, Coral World Park, Marcelo Racing, STP, Prestone, and Philippine Airlines sponsored the team.
