2 UB woodpushers to compete in 2013 ASEAN chess tourney
by Harley Palangchao

Twelve-year old Bea Mendoza of the University of Baguio will be joined by FIDE Master Haridas Pascua in representing the country in the 2013 ASEAN Age Group Chess Championship in Thailand in June.

Mendoza, an incoming freshman at UB, ruled the 12-under of the 2013 National Age Group Championships grand finals in Taguig by beating opponents from the south.

Mendoza finished with 25 points when she beat Natorri Biazza Diaz of Sagay City, Negros Occidental and Allaey Jia Doroy of Agusan del Sur by a single point.

Aside from competing in Chiang Mai, Thailand from June 8 to 17, Mendoza will also play in the Asian Youth Chess Championships in Marchad, Iran from June 20 to 27.

“This is a big win for our chessers and we attribute this to the support of the parents and the UB family,” said UB coach Joseph Codiaman.

Pascua, meanwhile, finished behind International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia of Manila (25) and National Master John Alcon Datu of Caloocan City (21) to secure the third spot for the ASEAN games.

The tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines adopted the single round robin system in each category and used the Pichay-Torre scoring system, where a win is worth two points, zero for a loss, and 1.5 points for a player who stalemates his or her opponent.

Other UB wood pushers who saw action in the event were Shareena Kaye Barry Jee-Ann Barry, Engielyn Agamas (6 points and 16th in 12-under), and Brylle Gever Vinluan.

Pascua has been busy with international tournaments since the start of the year.

Earlier, the 19 year-old second year Information Technology student of UB won US$3,500 in the PSC International Chess Cup in Manila.
