Pitpitunge to defend PXC title v undefeated Japanese fighter
by Harley Palangchao

Pacific Xtreme Combat bantamweight champion Crisanto “The Slugger” Pitpitunge is set to defend his title against undefeated Michinori Tanaka of Japan at the PXC 37 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City on May 18.

Pitpitunge, who was busy both with his indoor training and police service, is exerting more time with ground and grappling as Tanaka has submitted his opponents in previous fights.

Tanaka is undefeated in his MMA career with seven wins. He fought under Shooto promotions before joining the PXC in the first quarter of 2012.

Pitpitunge of the famed Team Lakay has not been fighting for almost 10 months now since he knocked out MMA veteran Justin Cruz in the PXC 31 in July last year to be named PXC bantamweight champion.

The Igorot fighter, who holds a professional MMA record of four wins and one loss, has just completed his six-month police training at the PNP training center at Baguio Teacher’s Camp and is currently undergoing his field training with the Traffic Management Branch of the Baguio City Police Office.

Team Lakay head coach Mark Sangiao said they are giving Pitpitunge more training on ground and grappling.

“Crisanto is in good shape and he is ready to fight his opponent,” he said.

PXC announced flyweight champion Ale Cali will also defend his title against Louis Smolka.

Baguio’s adopted fighter, Mark “Mugen” Striegl, will also headline a four-man featherweight tournament that will decide the fate of the vacated PXC 145-pound division title.

Striegl will face Japanese fighter Yusuke Yachi, a Shooto champion from the famed Krazy Bee dojo in Tokyo, while longtime contender Jang Yong Kim of Korean Top Team takes on Hawaii’s Nate Thorell in the other side of the bracket.

Striegl, the fighter out of Fight Corps MMA along Trancoville, Baguio City, is undefeated in his 12 MMA professional fights.
