LT catches up with Baguio in grassroots football clinic
by Harley Palangchao

La Trinidad is fast catching up with Baguio in promoting football as a sport of choice among kids.

The recently concluded 2013 Kiko Summer Football Camp at the Benguet State University drew more than 300 participants aged six to 12, the biggest number since its inception in 2008.

Frael Aquino, organizer of the summer football camp, said there is a growing interest in football among kids and youth in Benguet.

The organizers taught the basics, which include foot dribbling, passing, goal scoring, and team play. The football camp transcended sports skills as the participants were also taught in developing their character.

“Aside from football skills, we also teach children how to interact with other participants,” said Aquino who organized the clinic, in honor of his father, Francisco.

This year’s summer camp was supported by the People’s Initiative for Learning and Communication Development, Pastor Gerry Moncada, and other partners US Peace Corps and Jaycees in cooperation with the BSU Club.

La Trinidad has seen the growth of football and how kids from the Valley dominated their respective category in football tournaments in Baguio.

Youthful players from La Trinidad were back-to-back champions in the event organized by GoshenLand.

Last month, La Trinidad booters went home with three championships in the second GoshenLand G-string Football Cup.

Owing to the support from the local government, members of the young footballers from La Trinidad won the 11-Under against players of the Baguio Central School.
