LAGAWE, Ifugao – The youth representative of the provincial board here filed a proposed ordinance seeking for financial assistance to athletes who may suffer injuries or die while playing in behalf of the `province.
The proposal stemmed from reports by the ad hoc provincial sports committee that said a number of Ifugao athletes have, in recent years, been seriously injured as a result of their participation in sports activities.
Set for discussion on its Sept. 10 session, the “Ifugao athletes of misfortune ordinance,” grants P50,000 for medical expenses in injuries and P50,000 aid in case of death.
The proposal’s author, Board Member Ronel Gayamo said the measure is a manifestation that “not only does the province hail its athletes in their moments of victory and glory but is also one with its athletes in times of their pain and misery.”
The proposal covers athletes authorized by the provincial government to compete in the Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association meet, the Palarong Pambansa, and similar reputable regional and national competitions.
Gayamo used to head the sports committee as ordered by Gov. Eugene Balitang which was later dissolved upon the creation of the Provincial Sports Council.
