Baguio Muay Thai fighters rule nat’l open w/ 33 golds

ACTION-PACKED -- The 2017 Panagbenga Muay Thai National Championship has been dominated by fighters from different teams in Baguio, who garnered more than 30 gold medals during the three-day competition at the city’s Igorot Park. -- Harley Palangchao



Fighters from different teams in Baguio amassed 33 gold medals, making the city the overall champion from 25 participating teams in the recently held 2017 Muay Thai National Open at the Igorot Park in Baguio.

Visiting fighters from Benguet also won 11 combined gold medals with two fighters from Bontoc winning two gold medals.

Members of the Muay Thai national team managed to bring home seven gold medals from the event backed by the Fernando and Rosa Bautista Foundation, the Department of Education regional office and Baguio and Benguet divisions and the Baguio City Police Office under S/Supt. Ramil Saculles.

Gold medalists from Baguio in the advance category are Zyra Mhel Binay-an, Mariah Co of Tribal Torogi and teammates Jenelyn Olsim and Jerry Olsim; Ruth Santong, Lyna Mae Lamog, Leilani Fagsao, Aubrey Bugayong, Gideon Fred Padua, Ezra Saclag and Jhanlo Mark Sangiao, both of Team Lakay; Kianlex Brent Briaga, Nelson Bantiyan of Scorpion Mabikas; and Daryll Bagangao of Kafagway.

Other gold medalists from Baguio are Wilfredo Padua and Jomar Balangui of University of Baguio and Lucky Mateo of Fight Corps MMA.

The lone gold medalist from the Philippine Military Academy is Ann Christine Espanola.

In the novice category, the gold medalists are Rainielle Mabiasan; Islay Erika Bomogao of Team Lakay; Ligaya Cagaid of Kafagway; Cristina Necesito and Rehyan Aguinaldo of MAX Fusion; Jelan Belwa, Colin John Banusan, Billy Reynaldo, and Keanu Dumalsin of Scorpion Mabikas; Barry White Belong, Glenfrey Decaleng, Tom Olivier Fortunato, Kenneth Banasan, and Kevin Kurt Kater of Baguio-WFP; and Arthur Tan and Kelly Marcelo of the University of Baguio.

The gold medalist from Benguet in the advance category is Liane Benito of Sablan while the gold medalists from Sablan in the novice are Jerriane Mae Leo, Rosemarie Recto, Nicole Grant Olarte, and Botchucoy Rico.

Gold medalists in the novice category with Benguet local government unit as their team are Janica Alawas, Rocky June Orine, Tanner Bulso, Daryle Wadasen, Charles Ablasi, and Jenevieve Lopate of Cordillera Career and Development College.

The two gold medalists in the novice category from Mountain Province are Oswart Bantasan and Mitsel Chumawar.

Muay Thai Association of the Philippines chair and president Lucas Managuelod thanked the fighters who came in droves to be part of the event backed by MAP-Baguio Chapter under Joseph Oloan.

Other supporters of the event are councilors Michael Lawana and Leandro Yangot Jr., City Sports Office, Panagbenga Foundation, Iyaman Resto Bar, Tac Arm Bar, Talamas Gold & Silver, Ricky Luken, Dinawis Cafe & Restaurant, Amazing Sabong, city government of Baguio, and the Philippine Sports Commission.
