Folayang to defend ONE belt vs Malaysian MMA superstar

Filipino ONE lightweight world champion Eduard Folayang will have his first title defense on April 21 in Manila against top Malaysian fighter, EV Ting who has defeated three Igorot warriors in recent years.

ONE Championship has confirmed last week that Ting will challenge the Igorot champion before roaring fans at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Riding high from his recent stellar performance that led him to capture the lightweight belt from longtime champion Shinya Aoki of Japan, Folayang is taking his training seriously considering that Ting is one of the most talented fighters to come from Malaysia.

Ting publicly called out Folayang after securing a unanimous decision victory against Kamal Shalorus in February. The Malaysian superstar hinted at getting the belt from Folayang when they come face-to-face next month.

Ting, who has 13 wins and three losses, has defeated former ONE featherweight champion Honorio Banario and the Kelly brothers – Eric and Edward – top featherweight prospects in ONE.

Folayang has weathered many  challenges as a professional MMA fighter.

The 33-year-old Igorot fighter does not want to frustrate thousands of Filipino fans, who will see him fight in Manila since his last fight at the MOA in December 2014.

“I know how exceptional EV Ting’s talent is. I am in a tough preparation for this bout. This will be my first fight in the Philippines since December 2014. I don’t want to let my countrymen down. I will make sure that the belt stays in the Philippines,” said Folayang.

One of the country’s most experienced fighters, Folayang has a pro record of 17 wins and five losses.

The veteran fighter has authored career resurgence in 2016, winning three consecutive matches against high-profile opponents and showcasing a highly improved wrestling and grappling offensive arsenal.

In his last bout, Folayang shocked the world by capturing the ONE Lightweight World Championship belt with a sensational victory over Aoki.

Team Lakay chair Mark Sangiao said he was not officially informed if other Lakay fighters will see action in the undercard of the ONE: Kings of Destiny although chances are two to three more fighters from the famed team are likely to face worthy opponents next month.
