Haridas pockets gold in Jolimark HK chess

ANOTHER GOLD -- Grand Master-elect Haridas Pascua topped the Jolimark-Hong Kong International Open Championship to close his 2016 campaign on a high note.
-- Gilbert Pascua

Grand Master-elect Haridas Pascua of Baguio closed the 2016 campaign with a gold at the Jolimark International Open Championship in Hong Kong recently.

The 20-year-old Pascua beat Dawson Tan Wei of Malaysia in the last round of the tournament that drew close to 90 players including top GMs from Southeast Asian countries.

Pascua was unbeaten in nine rounds but he gave up a draw to GM Samy Shoker of Egypt to finish the tournament with 8.5/9 points.

The Egyptian secured the silver courtesy of a superior tiebreak points against Filipino International Master Dimakiling Oliver who settled for third.

FIDE Master Villanueva Nelson of the Philippines completed the rank of Filipinos in the top 10.

Pascua’s father, Gilbert, thanked the University of Baguio family and Baguio Mayor Mauricio Domogan for their continued support for his son, who needs more international tournaments to become a full-fledged GM.

Pascua, a UB alumnus, has earned 39.2 points from his last three tournaments including the Hong Kong event. At present, he is listed at 2401 instead of 2240.

Sources said the points earned by chess players from the two tournaments held in the Philippines, which was participated by Pascua, will not be included in the FIDE ratings in January 2017.

This initial decision by FIDE is a major setback for Pascua who needs to reach the minimum Elo rating of 2500 to get to the GM title.

The Baguio boy chess wizard has already secured the three required GM norms but his Elo rating remains below 2500.

He is expected to be the 19th Filipino to become a GM since the country had its first Filipino GM in Eugene Torre in 1974. Torre is the first GM in Asia.
