Sanitary Camp Long Horns edged the battling Camp 8 Barangay Otso, 99-91, to claim the season’s hard court title at the close of Samahang Barangay Pangkalikasan-Lawana Cup Invitational Basketball Tournament Season 7.

After blowing five deadlock scores in the pay-off canto, the Long Horns went on with a corresponding five-point surge in the last three minutes to clinch victory at the Military Cut-Off covered court last Dec. 23, 2016.

Sanitary Camp, who fell to Barangay Irisan in SBP-Lawana Cup Season 6, leaned on the performances of Efren Mariano, Reagan Nabua, and former SLU guard Fergal Bugayong who combined for 52 points at the ender of the knockout finals game.

Mariano, who was crowned Most Valuable Player for the season, dropped three consecutive three-pointers that slowly put his team to a slim lead, 80-77, with five minutes 20 running in the fourth period.

Barangay Camp 8, led by Christian Galace and Philippine Military Academy’s Mark Mislang, however, pulled off a tough defense on their side to maintain an 80-80 gridlock with 3:15 remaining following a time out.

Campo Otso managed to take an early lead with Mislang dropping a quick three in the 3:10 marker to take an 80-83 break, but received a quick buck on the other end as Mariano and Nabua chipped in eight consecutive points to steal the lead with 2:57 running down the period.

Galace managed to cut the difference to 88-86 after pulling a three-point lead with 2:12 remaining but the season’s perennial champs sealed the deal after harnessing more backup from teammates Mike Bilibli and Arvin Gamboa.

The Long Horns, who managed to bar a 41 all score at the close of the second quarter, just marked their fifth SBP-Lawana Cup title since the most participated local amateur basketball tournament tipped off in 2011.

Bugayong led the scorers for Sanitary Camp with 18 points, Mariano finished with 17 points and five steals, Nabua highlighted his performance with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Bilibli and Gamboa chipped in with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Galace finished his game with 28 points for Camp 8, while Mislang contributed 26 including 12 rebounds, followed by Jason Manalo and BCT Atom Efren Pancog with 12 and 10 points accordingly.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Campo Otso drained defending Barangay Irisan Aces in a 94-83 mishap.

Now on its seventh season, SBP-Lawana Cup, sponsored by Liga ng mga Barangay Baguio President and Councilor Michael Lee Lawana, continues to promote camaraderie and unity in all 128 barangays through various sport and civic activities.

Apart from basketball, SBP-Lawana Cup also holds annual tournaments in billiards, darts, volleyball, golf, and other community-related events including tree planting and cleanup drives.
