by Harley F. Palangchao

Five young members of Team Benguet won six gold, two silver, and three bronze medals in the 2nd Daedo Taekwondo Championship in Singapore late last month.

Benguet Gov. Nestor Fongwan hailed the accomplishments of the young TKD jins from the province, saying investing on sports development programs and projects is one of the main thrusts of his administration.

John Kim Passion of Benguet State University Elementary School was a double medalist in individual poomsae and kruyugi while Xyril Aludos of STILE School was gold medalist in team poomsae plus silver and a bronze in individual poomsae.

Bjorn Jherico Camide of Puguis ES also snared gold and silver in individual poomsae while Aby Louise Quan of Star Colleges Foundation had gold in team poomsae and a bronze medalist in individual poomsae.

Dean Mark Monang of the Office of the Governor said the young medalists are entitled to cash incentives as endorsed by the governor for officially representing the province.

Before their trip to Singapore, the team members requested a certification that they will represent the province in the tournament held at Temasek Polytechnic Sports and Arts Center from Nov. 29 to 30.

Another  team from Baguio also joined the competition where the members won 20 gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals.

Other players are from Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Philippines.

The championship is sanctioned and organized by the Singapore Taekwondo Federation-Youth Development Committee in conjunction with J.H. Kim Taekwondo (Bukit Timah Branch). Teams from Malaysia, Taiwan, Australia, Indonesia and other nearby countries including the Philippines participated in this competition.
