FIRE SAFETY TIPS -- Fire Officer 3 Leo Mendoza of the Baguio City Fire Department demonstrates the proper way of putting out fire that caught an LPG tank, as the Bureau of Fire Protection-Cordillera aims to equip everybody with fire safety tips and precautions to achieve zero-fire incidence in the region. -- Hanna Lacsamana

The Bureau of Fire Protection-Cordillera launched the observance of Fire Prevention Month which, for this year, adopts the theme, “Ligtas na Pilipinas ang ating hangad, pag-iingat sa sunog ay sa sarili ipatupad.

BFP-Cordillera officials and personnel headed by S/Supt. Lilibeth Simangan, led the representatives of various regional line agencies and other partners in an advocacy rally around the city’s main thoroughfares that ended with a fire safety and prevention covenant signing.

Simangan also led other department heads of BFP in providing updates on their accomplishments and present status and thrust of the fire department in a media forum at the Baguio City Fire Station.

She assured the dedication and commitment of the 755-strong personnel of BFP in performing their mandate on fire prevention and suppression and the strict enforcement of the Fire Code.

She also called on the public to become fire safety advocates in their homes and in their communities.

“The BFP conducts inspections on government facilities and commercial establishment but when it comes to ensuring fire safety in every house/home, it lies with the members of the family, which is why I am encouraging everybody to be fire safety advocates,” Simangan said.

In observance of the Fire Prevention Month, the agency will hold a simultaneous blowing of horns of all firefighting apparatus, fire safety awareness campaign in elementary schools that will be spearheaded by the BFP mascot Berong Bombero on March 3 to 9 and a Bike for a Fire Safe Nation on March 10.

BFP, through the various fire stations in the region, will also conduct refresher training course to all volunteer fire brigades and barangay disaster control brigades.

There will also be an open house where each fire station will invite school children and educate them on the operations of fire truck and equipment and the proper use of fire extinguisher and orient them on fire safety.

The BFP in line with strengthening camaraderie among the bureau will also conduct fire prevention games and contests, from the regional to the national level.
