Youths eyed as key players in bid for autonomous Cordillera
by NEDA release

The National Economic and Development Authority-Cordillera met with various groups and agencies to explore ways to engage the youth in the advocacy on autonomy.

This is in response to the point raised by businessman Alex Bangsoy in one consultation that the youth is underrepresented in the campaign.

Among the three core messages of autonomy: enhanced Cordillera identity, responsive policies for the region, and progress for all, it was pointed out that the message of identity is the one that resonates most with the Cordillera youth.

Robert Domoguen of Department of Agriculture-Cordillera noted that the youth are hungry for identity and the duty of preserving the Cordillera culture falls unto them.

To secure Cordillera identity, it was agreed that the youth should not only be made aware of autonomy but also be actively engaged in the discussion.

NEDA Director Milagros Rimando. The participants recognized that the concept of regional autonomy has been dominated by elders and veterans of the autonomy struggle.

It was also agreed that increasing social media presence and ground-level engagement with youth groups should be prioritized and that the National Youth Commission would have a bigger role in engaging the youth in the advocacy.

Along with Outstanding Students of the Philippines-Cordillera member Paul Nuval, the NYC committed to prepare the design of a youth conference which will serve as the basis for further engagements with the youth.

Subsequent meetings of the core group are expected to iron out the preparations for the youth conference.
