Whistle for crime prevention stressed
by Carlito C. Dar / PIA

The National Police Commission in the Cordillera highlighted the use of the whistle in crime prevention when it launched National Crime Prevention Week (NCPW).

With the theme “Mamamayang mapagmasid, kapayapaan ang maihahatid,” Napolcom spearheaded the launching last Sept. 1 at the Baguio Convention Center through simultaneous blowing of whistles participated in by city officials, guests and the public.

Lawyer Costa Joy Anniban of Napolcom explained that the “Pito (whistle) tayo laban sa krimen” program aims to provide a specific mechanism for individuals and communities to have an active role in reducing the opportunities for offenders by enticing citizens to use a whistle to attract attention and prevent crime.

The whistle is a good warning device as it is audible at much greater distance than the human voice, she said and solicited the support and cooperation of the people for their personal safety. The whistle when used properly is a highly effective deterrent to street crimes.

The “Pito tayo laban sa krimen” is also promoted in schools to enable students to help prevent crime and maintain safety. This complements the government’s advocacy on the creation of Student Crime Prevention Committees.

Other activities set for NCPW are radio/TV guesting and school symposiums on public safety, tree-planting in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and an  on- the-spot painting contest in partnership with Baguio artists group, Pasakalye.
