PH, Russia to bolster trade, agri, military ties

President Rodrigo Duterte and Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to strengthen their trade, agriculture, and military ties.

Putin, one of the most powerful leaders in the world, and Duterte, a rising influential leader of Asia, met in the sidelines of the 27th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation during a bilateral meeting attended by seven members on both sides.

Accompanying Duterte in the bilateral meeting were Foreign Affairs Sec. Alan Peter Cayetano, Finance Sec. Carlos Dominguez, National Economic Development Authority Sec. Ernesto Pernia, Spokesperson Harry Roque, Special Assistant to the President Christopher Bong Go, Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Rey Leonardo Guerrero and Agriculture Sec. Manny Piñol.

The Russian side was led by Foreign Minister Sergy Lavrov.

Putin expressed his country’s interest in agriculture products, especially fruits, and marine products from the Philippines.

He also offered military hardware, including helicopters, and a submarine for the Philippine armed forces.

Duterte said the Philippines would like to have access to the Russian market for its agricultural and fisheries products.

He welcomed the Russian government’s plan to establish a ship repair facility in the Philippines.

Both leaders agreed to work on the strengthening their ties.

Duterte said he will name a special envoy to give more focus on establishing stronger relations with Russia.
