ASEAN promotion in Unity Gong relay
by Redjie M. Cawis and M. Paquiz

With the country chairing the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits this year, the Regional Development Council and the Philippine Information Agency promote ASEAN 2017 in the Unity Gong caravan that started last July 8 in celebration of the 30th Cordillera Month.

The advocacy campaign about ASEAN aims to create and heighten the public’s awareness on the country’s membership to the ASEAN including the opportunities, the Philippines’ chairmanship of ASEAN this year, and the thematic priorities.

As chair of ASEAN this year, which is also the 50th year anniversary of the 10 member-state organization, President Rodrigo Duterte wants everyone to be informed, included, and participating in ASEAN50 with the theme, “Partnering for change, engaging the world.”

The Cordillera Unity Gong relay is once again going around the different provinces in the Cordillera to sustain the call for regional autonomy and empowerment. It kicked off with a program and rituals at the Benguet Capitol grounds led by Gov. Crescencio Pacalso.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources-CAR headed by Regional Director Ralph Pablo led a tree planting ceremony at the Capitol grounds as part of the annual activity while provincial DENR offices will lead similar activities in their respective areas.

From Benguet, the RDC with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples led by Regional Director Roland Calde, which is this year’s host agency, and other line agency heads and representatives will proceed to Mountain Province today, July 9, with Gov. Bonifacio Lacwasan leading the program.

The caravan will move to Abra led by Gov. Joy Bernos and Rep. Joseph Bernos. On July 10, RDC and Abra officials will travel to Kalinga via the newly opened Abra-Kalinga Road for the turnover of the gong to Rep. Allen Jesse Mangaoang, Acting Gov. James Edduba, and Tabuk City Mayor Ferdinand Tubban.

The gong’s next stop will be in Apayao with the caravan passing through the Luna-Pudtol-Kabugao-Cagayan Road.  Gov. Elias Bulut Jr. and Rep. Eleanor Begtang will receive the gong.

From Apayao, the caravan will travel on July 12 to Ifugao and is expected to be welcomed by Gov. Pedro Mayam-o and Rep. Teddy Baguilat.

On July 13, RDC and Ifugao officials will turn over the unity gong to Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Rep. Mark Go.

The unity gong will be back in Benguet for the Cordillera Day program at the Benguet Sports Complex in Wangal, La Trinidad, Benguet on July 15.
