by Ofelia C. Empian

A soldier was killed in action while one more government trooper was wounded during clash with the New Peoples Army rebels on Sept. 26 in Barangay Aguid, Sagada, Mountain Province.

Killed in action was Cpl. Jordan Manawa of Pinukpuk, Kalinga while the wounded personnel was Pvt. Melvin Modes who were both part of the troops conducting operation in the area when the NPA rebels fired at them at around 11:40 a.m.

Col. Henry Do-yaoen, commander of the 503rd Brigade, said the troops received reports of the sighting of armed men as well as presence of landmines in the area.

He said that soldiers recovered two improvised explosives and assorted chemical components for improvised explosive devices in the vicinity.

“Ni-recover ng mga sundalo iyan, sa kasamaang palad nagkaroon ng eng-kwentro at tinamaan ang kasamahan natin,” Doyaoen said.

It took a while to extricate the troops from the area but on Sept. 27 at 9:20 a.m., the wounded and the fatality were airlifted through the Philippine Air Force helicopter.

The incident command post at Bangaan, Sagada was also terminated.

Doyaoen said military personnel are supporting the police in the region in its fight against insurgency.

In a statement, the NPA’s by Leonard Pacsi Command through its spokesperson, Magno Udyaw, said the encounter was an offensive tactic on their part.

“Batay sa mga ulat ng mga taga-Besao at ng karatig na bayan ng Tubo, Abra, nanghimasok ang mga tropa ng pulis at militar sa mga komunidad upang kum-piskahin ang mga inimbak na armas ng NPA sa mga tahanan,” Udyaw said.

He said with the upcoming 51st anniversary of CPP in December, the police and military are doing various tactics to tarnish the reputation of the underground movement and its allies.
