28-year-old rebel yields to gov’t forces in Mountain Province
by Harley F. Palangchao

MOUNTAIN PROVINCE – A 28-year-old New Peoples Army rebel is the latest member of the underground movement to surrender to the authorities in the province.

The rebel returnee from Sadanga but a resident of Tubo, Abra is a member of the Kilusang Larangang Guerrilla of the Nona del Rosario Command with main operations in Ifugao.

Mountain Province Police Provincial Office Police Public information Officer Captain Pedro T. Tactay said that the rebel returnee surrendered to composite teams of the Provincial Intelligence Branch, Provincial Mobile Force Company, Regional Intelligence Unit-14, Bontoc Municipal Police Station and elements of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

He said the former rebel surrendered after a series of discreet monitoring and communications by government operatives under the supervision of MPPO Dir. Police Col. Clarence Casilio.

The rebel returnee, after completion of all documents, will be turned over to the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office for assessment and processing of his initial assistance and livelihood program.

Earlier, the AFP reported a looming mass surrender of armed rebels and militiamen following a presidential directive for the government forces to crush the underground movement that has been waging a Maoist-inspired rebellion in the country for five decades now.

In August 2018, close to 40 supporters of the underground movement in the Cordillera with operations in Mountain Province and Ifugao surrendered in separate occasions, according to the 54th Infantry Battalion.
