Waste management is everybody’s concern
HANNA SELINA O. NATIVIDAD, Baguio City

Irresponsible waste disposal poses a huge threat to the environment, public health, and safety of the people. It threatens every citizen, especially the vulnerable groups such as children, elders, and pregnant women, among others because of pollution.

Addressing waste problems is not only the duty of the local chief executives, but also the barangay officials and their constituents.

Everyone must learn to dispose and manage their wastes in their homes and in their place of work to help reduce the volume of garbage hauled to the sanitary landfills. This concern calls for serious action and strict implementation of local and national environmental policies. Residents must also abide by these policies. The barangays, meanwhile, must establish their material recovery facilities to accommodate recyclable and reusable wastes. Households too should learn to practice composting their biodegradable wastes. By practicing the three Rs – reduce, reuse, recycle, we can be assured that only the special wastes will be hauled and delivered to the landfills.

Another method to learn and apply is the 5S method – sort (suriin), systematize (sinupin), sweep (simutin), standardize (siguraduhin ang kalinisan), and sariling kusa (discipline/initiative). Through this method, we can help make our place clean, orderly, and sanitized. A clean environment will help us work properly because we do not have to worry about pollution that causes illnesses. A clean environment assures us that the food we eat and water we drink is clean.

Let us start acting for a clean and healthy environment, learn and practice discipline and participate in the eco-friendly initiatives to ensure our safety from any pollutant and toxic materials that greatly affect our health. Managing our wastes responsibly will save us from contaminating ourselves.

Now is the time to give serious attention to environmental concerns. Let us make responsible waste disposal a way of life by practicing it in our homes, in school, and anywhere we go.

We, the youth, who are often considered as pasaway, must start being responsible.

Our environment will be saved from pollution if we start doing our share to make our city, our country a comfortable, safe and livable place to live in.

:: Dealing with universal creation
In Genesis 1:1, we read: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth." This is not the only place in the Bible where we read about creation. The remarkable work of God’s creation…
