A cultural difference
ELMER APACWAY, La Trinidad, Benguet

I was told that the Japanese put premium to honor in their day-to-day living.  It is incumbent for anyone in a Japanese household to guard the family’s reputation and not to expose it to any kind of shame.

A man of position in the government or in private, for instance, have to step down if his performance of his duties is deemed poor or inadequate in order to make way for improvement.  Almost everyone concerned would agree that the man stepping down has done the right thing.

We do it quite differently here in the Philippines. Of course, we know what honor means and what shame does to anyone, but it seems they are nowhere near anyone’s focus.  We are more adversarial in nature and we go to length to fight for our rights.

In our culture, it is the right thing to do.

Looking into the Japanese society, one can be amazed how rich and orderly their life is.

Their crime rate is low and they are not beset with drug problems.  Their agriculture and manufacturing sectors are models of efficiency.  What could be the reason for this?

Perhaps their deeper sense of honor is making all the difference.
