Insights of a full–blooded Igorot
CAROLINE L. BELTRAN, Baguio City

Since time immemorial, the issue on Igorots keeps on emerging in various media platforms. This include a written piece titled “Igorots are humans, not animals” published in the Speaking Out section of the Baguio Midland Courier on its Feb. 4 issue.

The writer encountered someone at Burnham Park saying, “Igorots nga naman, may buntot na nga, nakakadiri pa.” Such remarks are not misinformation but ignorance. It is a lack of knowledge. Moreover, ignorance of the law excuses no one.

Sometime in 1968, former Asssemblyman Carlos Romulo declared that Igorots are not Filipinos. The late Alfredo Lam-en, the tall and handsome governor of the Igorots at that time, challenged the short Romulo to a debate. Romulo retracted and said nothing to prove his declaration.

We, Igorots are sometimes called natives. The word native refers to one born or produced in a region or a country in which one lives. Synonymous to native is indigenous which is opposed to foreign. An Igorot is one belonging to a group of Malay tribes of Northern Luzon, Philippines, some of whom are head hunters, according to the dictionary.

All peoples have their roots in the Creator God, and therefore all are equal. In Acts 17:26 of the Bible, the Apostle Paul told the Athenians that from one man, God created all the nations throughout the whole Earth. He decided before hand when they should rise and fall, and He determined their boundaries.

The Biblical verse reminds us that we are all from one blood. This affirmation would be hard for the Athenians, who prided themselves in being a superior people, calling others barbarians, according to a commentary. However, because we are all descendants from our first parents, Adam and Eve, no race or ethnicity is superior or inferior to another.

Equal in God’s sight, together we praise and honor Him for His name alone is exalted. Creation displays God’s power. I am created totally in the image and likeness of God. Amen.
