No to car park podium at Burnham Park
PROF. ROWIE BOQUIREN, University of the Philippines Baguio

The insistence of the city council and the chief executive to put up within Burnham Park, not just one but even several buildings to serve as multi-level car parking with a mall and a hotel, is deplorable.

Various sectors who are against the idea of car park projects at Burnham Park are repeatedly being ignored by the city government.

Melvin Jones, Ganza parking lot, Igorot Garden, and now, even the location of the Old Auditorium and Library, all at Burnham Park, are not for parking.

The legal, historical, ground stability, health, urban mobility and carrying capacity  issues have been explained over almost two decades to the city officials, no less, in consultations, statements and position papers, official planning activities, since the BLIST planning from 1993 to1994 have rejected car parking proposals and was widely chronicled in the mass media.

May I ask the mass media to help us stop this ever-repeated wishy-washy process being observed by the city council members in order to pass their always-rehashed car parking proposals at Burnham Park. And don’t use the UC Burnham Park Master Plan that has no approval from either the city council or the public when presented in 2010. Just be honest, please?
