A wake-up call to teachers
CAROLINE L. BELTRAN, Baguio City

This refers to the complaint of an OFW parent on the Math teacher of her grade 7 child, which was published in the Week’s Mail section of the Courier in its Sept. 17 issue.

In the letter, the parent complained: “Pag-iinsulto, pagmumura, pangungutya, masungit….dahil mahina ang anak ko sa Math.”

The words of the teacher can be very devastating and it seems the particular student is hurt the most.

“You are no good, you’re a failure in Math,” such words of a teacher can do permanent damage. Some students have been so deeply wounded with just one sharp and biting word. Words cannot break bones but they can break hearts.

Everyone has an obligation before God to evaluate the impact of words blurted out. Idle, angry, hateful words can inflict great harm for which we will be accountable as stated in the Bible.

Teachers should use words to bless their students, build one another and glorify our Creator in everything done in and out of the classroom. The tongue is a small organ that creates either discord or harmony. Words are verbal dynamite and can destroy people. Words should be carefully weighed before they are spoken.

The way teachers talk can make a powerful impact. It can ruin a reputation, destroy friendship, and can cause lasting headaches. It is so easy to say the kinds of things that are disrespectful, scandalous and cruel.

Teachers are in a leadership position. To lead, help, and inspire students to learn, teachers must first of all be examples. One cannot teach what one does not know nor lead where one do not go.

Ephesians 4:29 is loud and clear. “Do not use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be encouragement to those who hear them.”

Teaching is hard work, and doing it well takes time, preparation, study and prayer.
