Uniting farmers is difficult to achieve
LEONARD T. AGUINSE, Kabayan, Benguet

May I share my thoughts concerning an opinion written by Stephen C. Doriano entitled “Farmers Unite” in last week’s issue of the Courier.

Unity among farmers in order for them to have the power to ultimately dictate the price of their produce has really been evasive. Prior to the implementation of the ASEAN integration, various interventions by the government through the Department of Agriculture have been done in a bid to organize them and establish a system of market strategy favorable to both our farmers and the customers. However, due to certain circumstances one may find absurd, this objective did not materialize.

In spite of this, various agricultural programs and interventions have been continually provided by the government to our farmers. The DA through its attached corporation, the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, is granting insurance coverage for the farmers’ crops, livestock, machineries, and others. Another is the Agricultural Credit Policy Council, which provides affordable loans to our farmers through their respective coops or associations.

Still other similar programs for the benefit of the farmers can be availed upon inquiry from the DA. Farmers who have good agricultural practices certificate are sought by high-end buyers and can sell their crops at more stable price similar to those who are propagating organic vegetables.

While the realization of genuinely united farmers is still in the snail-paced process of attainment, farmers don’t have other options but to continue doing what they do best – to grow crops the best way they can and anticipate the best price of their produce for their family to survive in this ever-changing world.
