The ordinance passed by the city council declaring May as “Farmers Month” in Baguio is well appreciated. Gardeners in the city also deserve to be recognized for their contribution in ensuring food security and environmental stability.
To make the commemoration significant, a search must be undertaken to identify people and groups, who have exemplified the viability and success of farming in the city and be honored and given incentives and awards during the occasion.
Urban agriculture which is intensive growing of crops and raising of animals in limited space in a high populated area – in yards and in designated agricultural zones – is encouraged for the health, monetary and ecological benefits it gives.
The remaining lands suitable for agriculture not only in the city but elsewhere in the country must also be protected against encroachment and conversion since farming is paramount in our survival.
