The partnership between the city government and the Filipino-Chinese community in developing the Filipino-Chinese Friendship Park inside the Botanical-Centennial Park will continue.

City Environment and Parks Management Office Asst. Department Head Rhenan Diwas in a report to Mayor Benjamin Magalong said his office reached an agreement with Fil-Chinese community representative Peter Ng on exploring ways to further beautify and add significance  to their portion of the park located in the middle of the 1,600-square meter garden.

Diwas said Ng agreed to the plan to introduce modifications that will synchronize its features with the overall theme of the Botanical-Centennial Park and even offered to provide the needed resources for the sake of improving the park.

Diwas said the existing features including the life-size sculpture of a panda and the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac signs will not be removed but will be enhanced to also convey the theme.

The sculptures along with a Norfolk tree were part of the enhancements done by the community for the park which also included the paving of the walkway and construction of a pavilion.

The improved park was inaugurated in June in ceremonies attended by People’s Republic of China Consul Zhao Yubien and where the Fil-Chinese community explained the significance of the new features.

The panda symbolizes welcome, the Norfolk tree means better relationship and the animals have their own meanings in the zodiac.

Diwas and the group will meet soon to discuss the plans.
