Igorot group in UK celebrates 24th founding anniv thru canao
by Ofelia C. Empian

It was a celebration of culture and unity when hundreds of Igorots gathered to celebrate the 24th founding anniversary of Igorot UK on Sept. 21 at Goushia Hall, Walthamstow, London, United Kingdom.

The event also ushered in the conduct of the 14th grand cañao attended by 480 individuals with their families during the event with a theme: “Raising awareness of our cultural heritage, our pride.”

Councilor Cynthia Barker, Deputy Mayor of Elstree Way and Borehamwood, was the guest of honor where she said the Igorot cultural heritage created a sense of belongingness among Igorots while contributing in the diversity and uniqueness of UK communities.

Special guest, lawyer David Dao-as, former chairman of the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples, has urged the community to preserve their culture while acknowledging that cultures around the world are also evolving.

He said each member should love the organization, its leaders and members for it to prosper. Also gracing the event was Lyn Madalang, executive director of the gender-rights group Ebgan.

The group relived the Cordillera way of life through traditional dances and beating of gongs during the grand cañao also attended by non-Igorots who wanted a glimpse of the highland culture.

Established in 1995, the Igorot UK has been instrumental in bringing together Cordillerans who are working in various professions and has been living in the United Kingdom.

Since its foundation in 1995, there have been 10 sets of officers. The past Igorot UK presidents are Stone Richard B. Pooten (Sept. 1995-1997), Edmund Bugnosen (1998-1999), Conchita B.
