2,000 Muslims gather for Eid’l Fitr
by Redjie Cawis and Jeckryl Dulinen

MUSLIMS FOR PEACE AND PROSPERITY -- Countless Muslims from Baguio, Benguet and from overseas gathered at the Baguio Athletic Bowl June 5 to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan and to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, as they renewed their commitment to spread goodwill and help promote peace and prosperity in the highlands. -- Harley Palangchao

More than 2,000 Muslims in the city and nearby areas gathered at the Baguio Athletic Bowl on June 5 for the Eid’l Fitr, which signals the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Islam teacher Imam Jamael Usodan said the Muslim community in Baguio City and nearby areas was blessed with a good weather for the mass gathering and prayers or the Salat al-Eid or the special prayers offered to commemorate the Islamic festivals in an open space.

Usodan said their prayers include the attainment of unity and peace in the country, particularly in the conflict areas of Mindanao.

President Rodrigo Duterte, in his message, called on all Muslim Filipinos to deepen their role as instruments of love, respect, and selfless service.

“Take this as an opportunity to deepen your role as instruments of love, sacrifice, respect, and selfless service and may each of you remain our government’s partner in promoting peace and understanding among Filipinos from all walks of life,” he said.

Duterte declared June 5 as a regular holiday.
