The Fuchu City Rotary Club in Tokyo, Japan donated 113,210 pieces of assorted bowls and plates to the different public elementary and secondary schools of Benguet on Jan. 4.

Jeanira Okubo, executive assistant at the governor’s office said the donation was initially pegged for only 17 schools in the province but the donations they received exceeded their expectations.

She said the donations arrived in two 20-footer container vans.

“The Rotary handled all the fees at the Bureau of Customs including storage fees while the paperworks are being worked on. Sadly, the tax exemption for the donation was not given to us. They took care of everything, loading and unloading na lang sa amin,” Okubo said.

The simple turnover was conducted at the Benguet Sports Center multipurpose gym in Wangal, La Trinidad in coordination with the Governor’s Office that facilitated the event, the Japan Agricultural Exchange Council local coordinator Koji Kaneda in behalf of the Fuchu City Rotary, Club led by its president Yasuhiro Murakami, Department of Education Benguet Schools Division Superintendent Carolyn Verano and witnessed by staff and teachers of the DepEd-Benguet.

Verano said the donated items will be useful for the schools in their feeding program for the elementary and Home Economics classes for high school.

She said they have distributed the items to the more than 60 secondary schools in the province while they will still identify which of the more than 300 elementary schools will become beneficiaries.

“We are looking forward to more partnership with them,” Verano said.

Earlier, daycare centers in La Trinidad were also recipients of the items.

JAEC’s Kaneda said members of the Fuchu City Rotary Club and some officials of Fuchu City visited the province late last year.

He said they had initial discussion about the donation with Gov. Crescencio Pacalso, adding that it was the first time the donation was conducted by the Rotary to the province.
