BenCab marks 10th w/ solo exhibit
by Press release

BenCab Museum marks its 10th anniversary with the opening of Dexter Sy’s solo exhibition “Mark Time.”

Sy approaches the cultural particularities of being a Chinese-Filipino. The coexistence of two traditional value systems, which are both seemingly equally waning in the contemporary era, perform as theoretical source for his paintings in Mark Time.

Abundant allusions to religious, traditional, and contemporary matters are found in Sy’s carefully arranged works.

Applying iconographic depiction in a classic pictorial composition, the artist emphasizes the cultural patchwork.

The works are reminiscent of thoroughly elaborated mind-maps and assembled selective retentions.

It is as though the works are subconsciously staged as altar pieces estranged from its reliquary character through the depiction of nonreligious elements, contemporary references and a vibrant, traditional Chinese color palette.

Also on view in the Sepia Gallery is a 10-year retrospective of BenCab Museum’s posters from 2009 to 2019, ranging in subject from art exhibitions to events.

Both exhibitions are on view until April 21.

BenCab Museum is at Km. 6 Asin Road, Tuba. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It is closed Mondays, Christmas Day, and New Year. It is open on regular hours during the Holy Week.
