Series of activities lined up in urban farm youth confab

Contests for spoken poetry, on-the-spot canvas painting, song writing and singing, cacao-based food processing and packaging, glass gardening (terrarium), and 4-H quiz bee will be conducted during the first urban farm youth convention on April 11 and 12 at Allyana Solenn’s Resort, Km. 9, Asin Road in Tadiangan, Tuba, Benguet.

Spearheaded by the City Veterinary Office, Agriculture Division under City Agriculturist Alberto Tomas, with the theme, “BIDA 4H: Bringing innovation and development in agriculture through 4H club,” the event will be attended by Baguio 4H club members and coordinators.

Contestants for the four-hour on-the-spot canvas painting shall provide their materials: a fabricated canvas with a 15 x 25 inch frame, paint (water-based acrylic, lamb black, thalo red, thalo blue, hanza yellow, semi-gloss white and emulsion) and may bring tripod, mixing palette and pencils. The facilitators will identify a specific concept to be painted.

Details on the spoken poetry shall be given on April 11, with an hour to write an original Filipino or English or a combination for presentation in free verse. A 30-minute memorization and five-minute presentation is allowed for each contestant. One point will be deducted for every 30 seconds in excess of the five-minute presentation.

In the song writing and singing competition for 4-H club members, a four-minute song entry with accompaniment/minus one either in English or Filipino or a combination of both, should be original. Two song recordings, one for a live performance shall be submitted in a CD or flash drive during the first day of the convention. The final submitted versions of all the songs shall be co-owned by the 4-H club after the contest.

The pasalubong package contest will use dried, fresh or semi-processed, or pulp cacao which will be provided by the participant and used as main ingredients.

The participant should be in proper attire with necessary personal protective equipment for the three-hour processing period. The will judges roam around during the product processing and are allotted a five-minute question and answer at the presentation.

For the branding, complete information on the ingredients, net content, processing date, name of processor and shelf life of at least three months, and origin of the product should be printed with the 4H club of the Philippines logo.

The terrarium contest will be done within two hours on April 11 in the presence of judges for possible inquiries on creativity and artistry, visual impact, economic value, safety work habit and ability to answer questions. Quality and durability will be checked in the morning of April 12.

Contestants should bring their own materials: glass container, natural or artificial rocks, pebbles, gravel or sand, horticultural or activated charcoal, moss, soil, and plant of choice. Pre-assembled materials are not allowed.

Registration for the contest will be on site on April 11, with awarding of certificates and cash prizes during the closing program on April 12.

Judges are Tomas, Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Council Chair Balbina Ernesto, and barangay officer Glory Taclawan.

The convention includes a learning visit to the Korean Greenhouse Technology at the Bureau of Plant Industry compound in Guisad on April 12.

Committee on market, trade and commerce and agriculture chair Councilor Leandro Yangot and Mayor Mauricio Domogan will serve as keynote and guest speaker, respectively.
