Benguet sets day for teachers in September
by Primo Agatep / PNA

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – The provincial board of Benguet has approved an ordinance declaring the last Friday of September as Teacher’s Day.

Provincial Ordinance 15-170 aims to honor teachers and provide them a venue where they could actively participate in the celebration of the National Teacher’s Month.

The ordinance also awards qualified teachers based on length of service, exemplary achievements, and outstanding performance.

It also aims to allow teachers to conduct activities that will make them feel the importance of their role in molding students into responsible citizens.

The ordinance covers public and private school teachers serving either full-time or part-time, or and permanent or contractual. Industrial arts or vocational teachers and those performing supervisory and administrative functions in schools are also covered.

The ordinance, principally authored by Board Member Johnny Waguis, is anchored on Proclamation 242 that declares Sept. 5 to Oct. 5 every year as “National Teachers Month” in the Philippines.

The ordinance also increases the allocation for the celebration from P300,000 to P500,000, to be taken from the general fund or from the Provincial School Board.

“We know that teaching is a very noble profession and honoring teachers is a way of acknowledging their hard work and sacrifices,” said Board Member Robert Namoro, one of the measure’s proponents.
