Baguio–based design firm wins in prestigious Kohler award
by Rimaliza A. Opiña

The Baguio-based architectural firm, 90 Design Studio,  has been awarded in the prestigious 2017 Kohler Bold Design Award.

90 Design Studio’s G1 Lodge, located atop Session Road has won in the Boldest Urban Hotel category. It bested BGC Hotel Expansion and Associates and Acacia Hotel Davao of Grit Design Studio.

Presently under construction, G1 Lodge is located at Upper Session Road, on only a 200 square meter lot. However, the designers were able to maximize the small space and even designed it to allow daylight and natural ventilation to penetrate.

Another project of the firm, the Museo Kordilyera of the University of the Philippines Baguio is a finalist in the Boldest Cultural Space category.

The Kohler Bold Design Award honors the most outstanding projects in the design industry, worldwide. Kohler launched the first awarding ceremony here in the Philippines only last year, giving the winners in the 11 categories the distinction of being the first awardees in the country.

The panel of judges are international and Filipino experts like Bill Bensley, creative director of Bensley Studios, which are based in Thailand and Indonesia; Budji Layug, chair and principal designer of the  Budjhi+Royal Architecture+Design in the Philippines; Carmelo Casas, president of Casas Architects also based in the Philippines; Kenneth Cobonpue, founder  and creative director of Kenneth Cobonpue Philippines; Royal Pineda, chief executive officer of Budji+Royal Architecture+Design; Simon Rawlings, creative director of David Collins Studio based in the United Kingdom; and William Lim, founder and managing director of CL3 based in Hong Kong.

In its website, Kohler said the judges selected the shortlist “by the designers’ boldness, overall creativity and imagination for the project, the practical use and purpose of the design, and the aesthetics of the space and building.” The judges also looked at the impact the project will have on the design industry in the Philippines.

Kohler was founded in 1873. It is one of America’s oldest and largest privately held companies. It is a global leader in the manufacture of kitchen and bath products; engines and power systems; premier furniture, cabinetry and tile; and owner/operator of two of the world’s finest five-star hospitality and golf resort destinations in Kohler, and St. Andrews, Scotland.
