First child of couple from Abra chosen as lucky New Year baby
by Aileen P. Refuerzo / PIO

NEW YEAR BABY -- Balikbayan Josie Delinela (4th left); couples Edel and Angel Villaralbo (5th and 6th left) share their blessings to Joylyn Diwayan whose daughter Crystal was chosen as the Lucky New Year Baby as part of the 44th Silahis ng Pasko led by Nars Padilla in cooperation with the city government. The gift-giving event, conducted last Jan. 2, is held every New Year at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center. -- Zaldy Comanda

The first child of a couple who hails from Abra is this year’s Lucky New Year Baby, again, under the Silahis ng Pasko Christmas in Baguio activities.

Crystal Kaye Diwayan was born through normal delivery at 2:30 a.m. of Jan. 1 at the Baguio General Hospital to parents Dexter Gumisa and Joylyn Diwayan, both 24 years old and natives of Boliney, Abra but now residents of Apugan, Barangay Poliwes.

Dr. Allene Marie Caluza assisted in the delivery of Crystal Kaye.

Dexter is currently working as a laborer while Joylyn, a graduate of B.S. Engineering, is unemployed.

“Being first-time parents, they need someone to assist and guide them hence, Joylyn’s mother Lydia traveled to Baguio to help them in taking care of baby Crystal,” Social Welfare Aide Dolores Busacay noted.

“The family is happy and thankful for the blessing they have received this year especially that baby Crystal was the chosen 2018 Lucky New Year Baby.”

Search head former councilor Narciso Padilla of the National Correspondents Club of Baguio led the group that visited the New Year Baby last Jan. 2 for the gift-giving.

The baby received prizes consisting of cash gift, clothes and blankets and pillows and other goods courtesy of search benefactor retired U.S. Navy Angel Villaralvo and wife Edel Marie and balikbayan Josephine Delinela, Federation of Baguio Senior Citizens Association, Blessed Association of Retired Persons Foundation Inc., Office of the Senior Citizens Affairs and the City Social Welfare and Development Office.

The annual search capped the Silahis ng Pasko line-up of activities featured in the city’s Christmas in Baguio calendar.

Padilla thanked the partners, particularly the event hosts of each activity, co-volunteers from the government and private sectors, and the city government for their sustained support to the Silahis ng Pasko, which marked its 44th year in 2017.
