Benguet youth unite vs fake news
by Xenia E. Garnace

Students, teachers, and journalism enthusiasts from Baguio and Benguet united to help intensify the campaign against the proliferation of misinformation or so-called “fake news” circulated through social media.

This was one of the highlights of a broadcast-journalism seminar, in which more than 1,300 participants from various schools in the city and Benguet participated in.

Participants from Alejo Pacalso Memorial National High School, Baguio City National High School, Benguet National High School, University of Baguio Preparatory High School, UB Science High School, UB Senior High School, Saint Louis High School Antamok, UB, University of the Cordilleras, University of the Philippines-Baguio, and Saint Louis University partook in the Jiggy Manicad Stories seminar held last Sept. 29 at the UB Gym.

In line with what was considered as a timely and controversial issue, broadcast-journalist Rodrigo “Jiggy” Manicad of GMA 7 emphasized the role of the youth in responsible social media usage.

Manicad’s talk focused on why people propagate misinformation and how to distinguish real from fake information.

The seminar was spearheaded by the Mediatrix Society of the Department of Communication and Broadcasting of the School of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences of UB.
