2017 Adivay highlights biggest Bindayan dance
by Ofelia C. Empian

In its 117th founding anniversary, Benguet invites one and all to participate in the biggest “bindiyan,” traditional circular dance of the Ibaloys, to be performed during the 2017 Adivay Festival in La Trinidad next month.

Benguet Gov. Crescencio Pacalso said during the launching of the festival that they are aiming to gather 1,600 people to join the circle during the traditional bindiyan

“There will be dancers clad in their native attires who will initiate the dance so it is suggested that if you come join us you should be in your native attire. But everyone is welcome to join the dance,” Pacalso said.

The community dance will serve as the highlight of the month-long festival.

Pacalso said the biggest bindiyan performance is also in line with this year’s theme, “Benguet culture, our future: Sustaining cultural identity amidst global challenges.”

As one of the newest innovations during the community parade, the marching bands will be stationed strategically along the road during the main event on Nov. 23, and participants will converge at the Benguet Sports Center grandstand.

Dr. William Dar, former secretary of the Department of Agriculture and an alumnus of Benguet State University, will be the guest speaker.

Various programs are lined up for the celebration starting with the kick-off ceremony on Nov. 13 at the Capitol and the Mr. and Ms. Benguet press conference.

Trade fairs at the Benguet Sports Center (BSC) will open on Nov. 14 while the agri-fair and techno fair dubbed as “potato fiesta“ will open on Nov. 15 at the BSC.

The Niyal ni Adivay (Gospel art show) will be on Nov. 19 to 20 at the BSC trade fair area. The Children’s Event: Philippine Fold Dance Competition is slated at the BSC Multipurpose gym on Nov. 20.

Nov. 18 will provide various activities starting with the farmer’s event at the BSC bagsakan area; cultural dance exchange at the BSC multipurpose gym; horse parade; Animalandia and Dongba ni Kavajo at the BSC; and Cowboy’s Night; while the Benguet Awards Night will happen on Nov. 21.

Talks include Land Congress (Nov. 16) at the Ben Palispis Hall, Feminism and Democracy (Women Leader in Benguet) will be on Nov. 17 at the Provincial Governor’s Office Conference Hall; SME Congress on Nov. 20 at the Ben Palispis Hall; Small Scale Mining Congress also on Nov. 20 at the BSC grandstand; Coop Weaver’s forum Nov. 24 at the Ben Palispis Hall; and Environmental Forum at the Halsema Highway and Benguet-Vizcaya Road on Nov. 24. The day of prayer will be on Nov. 26 prior to the closing of the trade fair.

Aside from the celebration of the Adivay in La Trinidad, Pacalso said other municipalities will also celebrate their respective founding anniversaries: Kapangan on Nov. 18; Kibungan on Nov. 21; and Atok, Tublay, and Sablan on Nov. 22.

“We also invite guests to attend the respective celebrations of our other municipalities to experience their culture and tradition aside from the main Adivay Festival,” Pacalso said.
